Micheal Okpara’s journey began in Umuegwu Okpuala, Ohuhu, in present-day Abia State. Despite being the son of a laborer, he attended mission schools and later won a scholarship to study medicine at Yaba Higher College, Lagos. Entering Politics: Micheal Okpara’s Call to Service
Michael Okpara actively pursued a career in politics, driven by his involvement with the Zikist Movement, a militant wing of the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC). In 1952, he successfully campaigned for a seat in the Eastern Nigerian House of Assembly, launching his distinguished political career. Additionally, he held various Cabinet positions, including Minister of Health and Minister of Agriculture and Production.

As Premier, Micheal Okpara championed “pragmatic socialism,” believing that agricultural reform was crucial to Nigeria’s success. Furthermore, he acquired and managed a large farm in his hometown, inspiring others to follow suit. Meanwhile, he prioritized educational and infrastructural development in Eastern Nigeria.
A Legacy of Excellence
Okpara’s impact on Nigeria is still celebrated today. Notably, he was a member of the Royal Academy of Physicians of Great Britain and received the prestigious GCON award in 1964. Moreover, various institutions and landmarks bear his name, including Michael Okpara Way in Abuja, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture in Umudike, and Okpara Square in Enugu.

On August 22, 2024, he was honored with a lecture and awards event, recognizing his contributions to Nigeria’s growth and development.
