Capt. Dr. Walter C. Eze, a trailblazing medical practitioner and traditional ruler, left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s medical and cultural landscape. He was the first Nigerian Military Medical Doctor. Born on November 16, 1925, Dr. Eze hailed from the esteemed family of His Royal Highness Micheal Eze, Okofia I, the traditional ruler of Ukpo kingdom in Dunukofia LGA, Anambra State.
Early Life and Education
Dr. Eze’s academic excellence led him to Dennis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS) Onitsha, followed by studies at Toronto University, Canada, where he earned his medical degree. He furthered his education in the United States, obtaining a Master’s Degree in Experimental Surgery. His military service in the Royal Canadian Army earned him the rank of Captain.
Founding of Toronto Hospital
In 1955, Dr. Eze founded Toronto Hospital in Onitsha, named after Toronto General Canada, where he had studied. This 160-bed establishment has grown to become the largest privately owned hospital in the state, boasting 5 Directors, 54 Professional Staff, 8 Management Staff, and 33 Labor Staff. The hospital’s strategic location along the Enugu-Onitsha expressway ensures easy accessibility for urgent medical needs.
Traditional Rulership and Legacy
After his father’s demise, Dr. Eze became the Traditional Ruler of Ukpo, Dunukofia Clan, taking on the title of HRH Igwe Dr. W. C. Eze. His legacy extends beyond medicine to his contributions to the cultural heritage of his community. He authored “The History of Dunukofia and Cultural Heritage” in 1963. Dr. Eze was also the older brother of renowned Oil Mogul and Billionaire, Engineer Arthur Eze.
Personal Life and Family
Dr. Eze married Justina Nebechianya Okafor in 1959, with whom he had three sons and one daughter.
