The Ogba Ukwu Cave: The biggest cave in all of west Africa in Nigeria
The Ogba Ukwu cave and waterfall is located in the heart of Owerre Ezukala local government in Anambra State. It is considered to be the largest cave in West Africa. This stunning natural attraction, accompanied by a picturesque waterfall, stands as a testament to Nigeria’s rich geological and cultural heritage.
Geographical Wonders
The Ogba Ukwu Cave measures over 5 kilometers in length, boasting an impressive depth of 40 meters. Its ancient limestone structure, formed millions of years ago, mesmerizes visitors with its sheer scale and rock formations.

Exploring the Cave’s Depth
To reach the cave you have to first go down a flight of stairs, which is pretty convenient. At the bottom of the stairs, you’ll find a dome (natural rock in the shape of an arena). In front of it is a natural swimming pool fed by the waterfall that never stops.
A short walk away from the dome will bring you to one of the two noticeable entrances to the cave. It’s not called the largest cave in West Africa for nothing. It takes about two hours to see every part of the cave. As you venture further, you’ll find a lot of fascinating things down there. Tucked into the ceiling of a tunnel are a rock spanner and gun that has been there for years.
Interestingly, the cave has a rich history. At the centre of Ogba Ukwu is a large area, legend has it that it was the living room of the ‘god’ of Owerre-Ezukala. The god had a very nice setup inside the cave with his household in different compartments and sentries at the cave mouth.
In another area of the cave, you would have to get down on your hands and knees to see where the remains of an elephant foot still stands.
The place is timeless and enchanting. It is a beautiful place to visit if you are considering going to visit any tourist attractions. Ogba Ukwu stands as a natural splendor, inviting adventurers, cultural enthusiasts, and nature lovers to explore its depths.
