In a groundbreaking achievement, Jane Pwajok Kangyang has been elected as the first female Student Union Government (SUG) president of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) in 49 years. With an impressive 59.10% of the total votes cast, Jane secured a landslide victory, garnering 1,682 votes.
Her closest challenger, Magaju, trailed behind with 969 votes, while Francis, Samuel Musa, and Yakubu secured 118, 54, and 24 votes, respectively.
Jane’s historic win marks a significant milestone for UNIJOS, demonstrating the university’s commitment to gender equality and empowerment. Her leadership will undoubtedly inspire future generations of female students to pursue roles in student governance.
This achievement is reminiscent of other trailblazing women who have shattered glass ceilings in politics and governance. Sirimavo Bandaranaike, for instance, became the world’s first female prime minister in 1960. Similarly, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir was elected as Iceland’s president in 1980, making her the first non-hereditary female head of state.
As Jane assumes her new role, she will face the challenge of representing the diverse interests of UNIJOS students. Her leadership will be crucial in fostering a conducive learning environment, promoting student welfare, and advocating for university policies that benefit all students.
Congratulations to Jane Pwajok Kangyang on her well-deserved victory! Her achievement serves as a testament to the power of determination, hard work, and the unwavering support of her peers.
She’s equally a medical student of the university.
