Oliver Sunday Akanite, popularly known as Oliver De Coque, left an indelible mark on African music. Born on April 14, 1947, in Ezinifite, Anambra State, Nigeria, Oliver De Coque began his musical journey at 17 with Ekpili music. Notably, his iconic stage name originated from his early days playing okwe, earning him the affectionate nickname ‘Oliver De Ka Okwe.’
Early Life and Career of Oliver De Coque
De Coque actively sought out musical mentors, learning from Congolese guitarist Piccolo and juju musicians Sunny Agaga and Jacob Oluwale. Consequently, by his teenage years, he had gained local recognition. Moreover, his international breakthrough came in 1973 after performing in London, followed by his guitar work on Prince Nico Mbarga’s 1977 album Sweet Mother.
Achievements and Legacy of Oliver De Coque
Oliver De Coque recorded an impressive 93 albums, with many songs blending modern music with traditional Igbo harmonies in the ogene genre. Specifically, notable singles include “People’s Club of Nigeria,” “Nempi Social Club,” and “Identity.” Additionally, he frequently collaborated with the Igede International Band, led by his brother Eugene.
Awards and Recognition
In 1994, the Alaafin of Oyo, Lamidi Adeyemi III, crowned De Coque ‘The King of Highlife’ of Africa. Furthermore, he received an honorary degree in music from the University of New Orleans.
Personal Life and Later Years
De Coque had 12 children, including four sons who followed in his musical footsteps: Solar De Coque, Safin De Coque, Edu De Coque, and Ikenna Akanite.
Untimely Passing and Tribute
De Coque passed away on June 20, 2008, due to cardiac arrest. Nonetheless, his legacy lives on. In 2021, Google honored him with a Doodle on what would have been his 74th birthday, celebrating his enduring impact.
