The Nigerian army has confirmed the tragic murder of a woman at its barracks in Enugu State, Southeast Nigeria, involving one of its soldiers.
Last week, it was reported that Muhammad Adamu, who joined the army through the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), allegedly killed Hauwakulu Tabra, his girlfriend, under tragic circumstances.
The shocking incident unfolded after it was revealed that Tabra, who was pregnant with another man’s child, had angered Adamu.
The alleged murder took place on Thursday night, with her body being discovered within the barracks premises the following day.
Army spokesperson Onyema Nwachukwu confirmed the event in a statement on Sunday, stating that Adamu, a private in the army, is now in their custody as investigation into his motives continues.
Nwachukwu speaking further, dispelled rumors that Adamu was a former Boko Haram member, clarifying that the Nigerian army has never enlisted individuals from the group. Instead, some members of the CJTF were integrated into the army due to their exemplary service in combatting terrorism in the Northeast.
Meanwhile, in the wake of this tragedy, the army has extended its sympathies to the family of the late Tabra and assured the public that justice will be served. Nwachukwu emphasized that the army does not tolerate unprofessional conduct or indiscipline within its ranks, promising swift and decisive action.
As the investigation progresses, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of discipline and ethical conduct within the armed forces.
