Thousands of Igbo women worldwide actively converge every August, leading an annual congress that reunites them with their matrimonial villages. Through this three-day tradition, they drive community development, conflict management, human development, and socio-economic initiatives, transforming Igbo communities.
The August meetings are strategically structured into three distinct parts:
Firstly, the village-level gathering encourages local engagement and participation. Meanwhile, the second part unfolds within the community, facilitating broader conversations and collaboration. Ultimately, the third part culminates in churches, where thanksgivings are held to mark the meeting’s conclusion.
Originating in the 1940s, the August Meeting was inspired by Church Missionary Societies that empowered women’s voices. Notably, the meeting’s timing coincides with the end of the farming season, when schools are on break, enabling Igbo women to easily return home and participate.
Initially, wealthy women marred the August Meetings by showcasing expensive attire and jewelry, intimidating others. However, introducing pre-chosen uniforms eliminated this pressure, promoting unity and equality.
Today, the August Meetings symbolizes Igbo women’s solidarity, celebrated through various artistic expressions, including a 2018 stage play and a 2001 movie, both titled “August Meeting”. Similarly, these creative works underscore the event’s significance, honoring the strength and resilience of Igbo women.
In conclusion, through this annual gathering, Igbo women continue to shape their communities and inspire future generations, demonstrating the power of women’s collective action and determination.

This is one thing the older generations have been able to accomplish. This community and oneness. Because God knows I won’t attend the August meeting. Lol, but I wish we were able to do something like this for our age.

I wish the younger generation could do something like this too
This is good as it promotes unity and a sense of belonging in the community. But is it only the women that partake or have this August meeting tradition?
I believe so but the men should also have an annual meeting tradition like this
