Flora Nwapa: A Champion of Igbo Culture and Literature

Flora Nwapa, known formally as Florence Nwanzuruahu Nkiru Nwapa (1931-1993) was a Nigerian novelist, poet, playwright and also called the mother of modern African Literature. Born in Oguta, Imo State, Nigeria, she was the daughter of Christopher Ilioma Nwapa, a wealthy businessman. She studied at University College, Ibadan, and the University of Edinburgh, before becoming a teacher and later a government official.

Flora Nwapa, a trailblazing author, shattered glass ceilings, becoming the first Nigerian woman to publish a novel, “Efuru”, in 1966.
