Igbo Political organisation and traditional leadership were characterized by a decentralized, egalitarian, and participatory system of governance. The Igbo society was therefore organized around autonomous villages and village groups, with power diffused among various social institutions.
Absence of a Centralized Authority in the Igbo political organisation
The Igbo political organisation system lacked a centralized authority or a consensus leader. Instead, administrative authority was delegated to the council of elders, who governed the community based on cultural norms and traditions. This system gave the natives a fair say in community affairs through the delegated power to leaders of social institutions.
Republican System of Government in the Igbo political organisation
The traditional Igbo political organization was based on a quasi-democratic republican system of government. The Igbo society was however described as classless, with a strong emphasis on individualism, egalitarianism, and achievement orientation. The fear of autocratic leadership or monarchical institutions was at the root of the Igbo political structure.
Preservation of Cultural Heritage
Igbo leaders preserved cultural heritage like arts, crafts, songs, myths, oral traditions, titles, dance, drama, festivals, and technology. However, Igbo cultural elements became identity markers, crucial for preserving Igbo race and traditions.
Evolution of Igbo Political Organization
Basically, Igbo political evolution began in pre-literate society with autonomous villages ruled by diffused authority. Igbo settlements formed a “beaded necklace” with broad-based decision-making and enforcement within each group.
Challenges in Tracing the Origin
It is challenging to accurately trace the origin of Igbo political organizations. However, Igbo political organizations were decentralized with popular participation at the core. Igbo political institutions valued individualism, egalitarianism, and achievement, rejecting centralization and authority.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the Igbo traditional leadership and political organization were based on a decentralized, egalitarian, and participatory system of governance. Lack of central authority and republican system preserved Igbo culture and unique political structure resisting centralization.
