Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, CON, has shaken the political landscape with his recent decision to bid adieu to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a party he helped shape since its inception in 1998.
In a surprising move, Ihedioha, a stalwart of the PDP and self-proclaimed founding member, cited the party’s recent failure to enact vital internal reforms and provide robust opposition as the catalyst for his departure. In a statement titled “Resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party,” Ihedioha reflected on his extensive journey within the party, expressing pride in his role in its development.
However, the seasoned politician expressed dismay at the party’s recent deviations from its core values, stating, “Regrettably, in recent times, the party has taken on a path that is at variance with my personal beliefs.” Despite his efforts to guide the party back on track, Ihedioha observed a troubling trend of inefficiency in enforcing internal reforms and offering credible opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a bold and decisive move, Ihedioha announced his resignation from the PDP with immediate effect, asserting that it was a difficult but necessary decision. “It is in the light of the foregoing, that I am compelled to offer my resignation from the People’s Democratic Party effective immediately. While this decision was difficult to take, I, however, believe that it is the right one,” he declared.
Despite bidding farewell to his long-standing political home, Ihedioha reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to contributing to Nigeria’s democratic progress and good governance. “Despite this resignation, I will always be available to offer my services towards the deepening of democracy and good governance in Nigeria,” he affirmed, signaling that his departure from the PDP is not the end but rather a new chapter in his political journey.
