Despite President Bola Tinubu’s call to suspend further protests, organizers of the #EndBadGovernance movement in Lagos and Osun states resumed peaceful demonstrations yesterday. Consequently, protesters converged on the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota, Lagos, and the Freedom Park in Osogbo, Osun State.
Meanwhile, the protesters criticized the President’s broadcast, saying, “The President cannot offer an olive branch while holding a dagger to our throat.” Furthermore, the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria Organising Committee expressed disappointment with the President’s speech, stating, “We consider the President’s decision to address the nation an important victory for our movementβ¦ The President cannot be approbating and reprobating simultaneously.”
LAGOS
Following the President’s broadcast, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu commended protest organizers for calling off the initial protest. Additionally, Commissioner for Information and Strategy Gbenga Omotoso said, “Lagos is peaceful, and that’s what Lagosians wantβ¦ We thank those protesting for doing well and rendering good service to Lagos.”
OSUN
In Osun State, economic activities resumed as banks offered skeletal services, and markets reopened, indicating a return to normalcy. Consequently, protesters marched through major business districts, calling for an end to bad governance. Coordinator of the Coalition for Concern Nigeria Citizens, Mr. Ajala Adetunji, clarified that the protest aims to fight bad policies, not witch-hunt the government. Governor Ademola Adeleke commended protesters for their peaceful conduct, promising to address their submissions promptly.
OGUN
Similarly, Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State appealed for patience and understanding, assuring that the current administration needs time and support for its economic policies to take effect. Moreover, Ogun State students and youths were praised by Governor Abiodun for their law-abiding nature during the protests. He noted that the government has heard their voices and is working to address their demands.
ONDO
Former lawmaker representing Ondo Central Senatorial District, Senator Ayo Akinyelure assured Nigerians, “President Tinubu’s programs will bring positive change.” Senator Akinyelure expressed optimism about the future, stating that President Tinubu’s planned programs will bring positive change. He announced upcoming youth empowerment initiatives in all six geopolitical zones.
The protests highlight the ongoing call for good governance and economic reform in Nigeria. Despite presidential appeals, demonstrators continue to demand change, emphasizing their right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.
In conclusion, the #EndBadGovernance protests demonstrate the people’s determination to hold their leaders accountable. As the movement gains momentum, Nigerians eagerly await tangible reforms and improved governance.
