The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), popularly known as KAI, has successfully dislodged occupants of 84 rooms constructed under the Eko Bridge at Elegbata, on Lagos Island. This development follows an attack on a member of the public at the location.
Accordingly, the Corps Marshal, retired Maj. Olanini Cole, disclosed that one person was arrested for building an eight-room toilet and linking the pipes to the Lagoon. Meanwhile, the agency’s Spokesperson, Lukman Ajayi, released a statement in Lagos on Monday.
Cole stated that the operation was carried out after a member of the public was attacked on the spot. Subsequently, the victim petitioned the state Commissioner for Environment, who ordered the demolition of the illegal structures.
Furthermore, Cole revealed that some evicted individuals had lived there for 30 years.
“It is interesting that eight toilet pipes were linked to the Lagoon, close to where fishermen were fishing. Some occupants were cooking for the public in that place,” he noted.
“The water they are using to cook can cause public health hazards. One person operating the toilet was detained,” the corps marshal added.
The evictees claimed financial constraints forced them to reside there, unable to afford decent apartments. Nevertheless, the LAGESC vowed to continue operations statewide, targeting black spots.
