Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, has reportedly passed away, with the Presidency confirming the news. According to sources, Lagbaja’s death was first announced by Jackson Ude three weeks ago.
Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja was appointed as the Chief of Army Staff by President Bola Tinubu on June 19, 2023, succeeding Faruk Yahaya. During his tenure, Lagbaja played a crucial role in leading the Nigerian Army’s efforts to address various security challenges in the country.
Lagbaja was born on February 28, 1968, in Irepodun, Osun State. He attended St Charles Grammar School and Local Authority Teachers College in Osogbo before joining the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987. Lagbaja graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Geography and later obtained a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the US Army War College.
Lagbaja had an illustrious military career, serving in various capacities, including as Commander of Headquarters 9 Brigade, Ikeja, Lagos State, and Headquarters 2 Brigade, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
He also participated in several military operations, including Operation Harmony IV, United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Operation Lafiya Dole.
The Nigerian Army has yet to release an official statement on Lagbaja’s passing, but the news has sent shockwaves across the country. Lagbaja’s leadership and contributions to the Nigerian Army will be remembered and honored.
