A devastating incident has shaken the Umuahala community in Abia State, Nigeria, as a young female employee, Ocheze Ogbonna, met her untimely death at the hands of a Chinese national working at Inner Galaxy Steel Company. The accused allegedly pushed Ogbonna to her death from a crane for rejecting his love advances and this sparked outrage and protests among the local youths.
As the community demands justice for their fallen sister, the protest was met with force by Nigerian Army personnel, resulting in the critical injury of Light Chimeko Ahuruonye, one of the demonstrators. Ahuruonye’s condition is so severe that local medical facilities are unable to admit him, and his family is racing against time to transport him to a city hospital.
A community leader has vowed to relentlessly pursue justice for Ogbonna, and the incident has exposed a web of concerning allegations about Inner Galaxy Group’s labor practices. Inner Galaxy Company is located at Umuahala-Obuzor in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State. An investigation revealed that the company operates like a “modern-day slave camp,” subjecting over 1,000 Nigerian workers to brutal conditions, including forced labor, physical and sexual assault, and confinement. The company’s actions have sparked widespread outrage, and the community is demanding answers and action.
As the Abia Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka, remains tight-lipped about the incident, the community is left to wonder how such atrocities could occur under the watchful eyes of the authorities. One thing is certain – the people will not rest until justice is served.
