Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman Mahmood Yakubu have been nominated for the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project’s (OCCRP) World Most Corrupt Person 2024.
This prestigious, yet infamous, award is given annually to individuals who have made significant contributions to corruption and organized crime worldwide. Last year’s winner was María Consuelo Porras, Guatemala’s Attorney General.
The OCCRP’s Person of the Year award has previously been given to notable individuals such as Vladimir Putin, Nawaz Sharif, and Joseph Muscat, who have all been implicated in various corruption scandals.
While the nomination of President Tinubu and Chairman Yakubu is not a formal accusation of corruption, it highlights the ongoing concerns about corruption and electoral integrity in Nigeria.
The OCCRP’s investigation and selection process involve a panel of experts who review nominations from around the world. The winner will be announced later this year.
It is essential to note that nomination for this award does not imply guilt, and both President Tinubu and Chairman Yakubu are presumed innocent until proven otherwise.
However, this nomination serves as a reminder of the need for transparency, accountability, and good governance in Nigeria and worldwide.
