Chilpancingo, Guerrero, Mexico – In a shocking and gruesome attack, Alejandro Arcos Catalán, the newly elected Mayor of Chilpancingo, Guerrero, was decapitated by a Mexican cartel just six days after taking office.
Arcos Catalán, a member of the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) party, had been sworn in as Mayor on October 1. His term was marked by hopes of reform and improved security in the troubled region.
The brutal murder is attributed to the Los Tequileros cartel, known for its ruthless tactics. This attack underscores the escalating violence plaguing Mexico, particularly in Guerrero state.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the mayor’s killing. Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and state officials have condemned the attack, offering condolences to Arcos Catalán’s family.
According to reports, Alejandro Arcos Catalán refused to make deals with the drug cartels, instead chose “peace”.
Before he took office, his intended minister of security was murdered. Last week Thursday his secretary general was put down, with a gunshot in broad day light.
43 year old Alejandro reportedly asked for extra security protection which wasn’t granted in time.
Alejandro was sworn in last week Monday.
On Sunday, he visited regions affected by Hurricane John, later that evening he became unreachable, until his head and Voter ID were found displayed on a white truck.
The person he replaced in office, Norma Otilia Hernández, was expelled after photos of her meeting a gang leader was leaked.
Norma’s party had been ruling for a while, so they have some sort of understanding with the cartels battling each other for supremacy in Chilpancingo.
Alejandro was from an opposition party, and he openly refused to make any deals.
Mexican reports suggest he might have inherited enemies. As the election that brought him to office was bloody, and atleast 6 candidates died and about 41 total were killed in that cycle.
And now 81 people have been killed in a syndicate manner in Mexico, this month.
The new president Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo who just assumed office on October 1st, reiterated that all of these is just to frustrate her government. Her security have been effectively increased following Alejandro’s demise.
